MenuLens

MenuLens Terms of Use

Effective date: 29 October 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Inventum Technologies Pty Ltd (ABN 54 689 311 288), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ("we", "us"), the maker of MenuLens. They cover the MenuLens apps and the website at menulens-inventum.web.app (together, "MenuLens"). By using MenuLens, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

Please read section 6. MenuLens uses AI to read menus. It can get things wrong, so you must always confirm allergens and ingredients with the restaurant.

1. Who can use MenuLens

You need to be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age to use online services without a parent's consent where you live, if that's higher (up to 16). If you're under 18, please use MenuLens with a parent or guardian's permission.

2. What MenuLens does

MenuLens lets you photograph a menu and then:

  • reads and translates it with AI,
  • shows reference photos, a short summary, likely ingredients, a spice level and converted prices for each dish,
  • pins each dish on your own photo of the menu,
  • flags dishes against the diets, allergies and dislikes you've set,
  • answers questions about the menu and suggests dishes,
  • if you sign in, saves menus and syncs your preferences.

We keep improving MenuLens, so features may change, and some may be added or removed.

3. Guest use and accounts

You can use MenuLens as a guest without creating an account. If you sign in with Google or Apple, you'll have a MenuLens account. Keep access to that sign-in secure, because anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us straight away at support@inventum.com.au if you think someone else has used it.

You can delete your account at any time in the app (You > Account > Delete account), or by emailing us. Our Privacy Policy explains what happens to your data.

4. Price and daily limits

MenuLens is currently free. To keep it running fairly, there are daily limits on scans and, for guests, on questions. At the time of writing, guests can scan 5 menus a day and signed-in members 30. Limits reset at midnight UTC, and a menu that comes back from our cache doesn't count.

We may change the limits. If we ever introduce paid features, we'll show the price and terms clearly before you buy, and you'll never be charged without agreeing first.

5. Using MenuLens properly

You agree not to:

  • use MenuLens for anything unlawful, or to upload anything you don't have the right to share,
  • upload photos of people, identity documents or other private information that isn't yours to share, or content that's harmful, abusive or illegal,
  • try to get around the daily limits, for example by creating many guest accounts or automating requests,
  • access MenuLens by any means other than our apps and website, or scrape, copy or resell its output at scale,
  • reverse engineer, decompile or interfere with MenuLens or the systems it runs on, except where the law allows you to,
  • use MenuLens to build a competing product, or to train AI models,
  • misrepresent who you are, or impersonate anyone.

We may limit, suspend or end access for anyone who breaks these rules or puts MenuLens or other people at risk.

6. AI accuracy and food safety

This is the most important part of these terms.

MenuLens reads menus with artificial intelligence. AI can misread text, especially handwriting, stylised fonts, glare or blurry photos. It can mistranslate, and it can miss or guess wrong about ingredients. Menus often don't list everything that's in a dish, and recipes, suppliers and kitchens change.

So:

  • Always confirm allergens and ingredients with the restaurant before you order or eat. This matters most if you have a severe allergy, coeliac disease or another medical condition, or a religious or ethical diet.
  • The red, amber and green flags are guidance, not a guarantee. A green flag means only that nothing MenuLens found clashes with what you've told it. It doesn't mean a dish is free of an allergen, or safe for you. Amber means MenuLens couldn't tell, so ask.
  • Ingredients marked "likely" or "possible" are educated guesses, based on how a dish is usually made.
  • Cross-contact isn't something MenuLens can see. Shared fryers, woks, surfaces and utensils can expose you to allergens in any dish.
  • MenuLens isn't medical advice and isn't a substitute for advice from your doctor or dietitian. Carry any medication your doctor has prescribed, such as an adrenaline auto-injector.
  • In an emergency, call your local emergency number (000 in Australia, 112 in Europe, 911 in North America, 119 in Japan).
  • Reference photos show what a dish usually looks like, not the dish this restaurant serves. They come from third-party sources.
  • Converted prices are estimates. They use a daily exchange rate and may not match the restaurant's price, card fees, tax, service charges or cover charges.
  • Translations, pronunciations, cultural notes and "How to order" phrases are provided to help, and may not be perfect.
  • Answers and suggestions from Ask and Pick for me come from AI. Check anything important with the restaurant.

You can help us improve by tapping Report a mistake on any dish.

7. Your content

You keep ownership of the photos you upload and of anything you write in MenuLens, such as questions and notes ("your content").

You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process and display your content, for as long as we need it to provide and improve MenuLens for you and as described in our Privacy Policy. That includes sending it to our AI and hosting providers. This licence ends when your content is deleted, except for copies in the shared, anonymous menu cache, which hold only the menu's text as we read it.

You're responsible for your content, and you confirm you have the right to upload it. Restaurant menus belong to their owners. Photographing a menu to read it for yourself is fine. Don't use MenuLens to republish restaurants' menus.

8. Feedback

If you send us ideas or feedback, we can use them without paying you or owing you anything.

9. Our intellectual property

MenuLens, its name, logo, design, software and the content we create are owned by us or our licensors and protected by law. We give you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive, revocable licence to use the MenuLens apps on devices you own or control, and the website, for your own non-commercial use, under these terms.

Reference photos belong to their creators. They're shown under those sources' licences, with credit and a link back where the source asks for it.

10. Other services

MenuLens relies on services from other companies, including Apple, Google and Anthropic, and on photo sources such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Pexels and Unsplash. Your use of Apple's or Google's sign-in, and of the App Store or Google Play, is also covered by their terms. We aren't responsible for third-party websites you open from MenuLens.

You're responsible for your own internet access and any data charges from your carrier, including roaming.

11. Availability

We work to keep MenuLens running, but we can't promise it will always be available, fast or free of errors. It needs an internet connection to read menus. We may pause it for maintenance, change it, or stop offering it. If we decide to close MenuLens, we'll give at least 30 days' notice in the app where we reasonably can, so you can keep what you need from your saved menus.

12. Ending these terms

You can stop using MenuLens at any time, and delete your account in the app. We may suspend or close your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect MenuLens or other people. Where it's reasonable to, we'll tell you why first. Sections 6, 7 (for content in the cache), 9, 13, 14, 15 and 18 continue after these terms end.

13. Your rights under consumer law

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes any right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law, or under any other consumer protection law that can't lawfully be excluded. That includes the consumer guarantees that our services will be provided with due care and skill and will be fit for any purpose you've told us about.

Where we're allowed to limit our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our liability is limited to supplying the services again, or paying the cost of having them supplied again.

If you live in the EEA, the UK or another country whose consumer laws give you rights that these terms can't take away, those rights still apply.

14. Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows:

  • MenuLens is provided "as is" and "as available". Apart from the guarantees in section 13, we don't promise that its output will be accurate, complete or suitable for your needs.
  • We aren't liable for any loss or harm that comes from relying on MenuLens's output without confirming it as section 6 asks, from things outside our reasonable control, or from your breach of these terms.
  • We aren't liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, revenue, data or opportunity.
  • Our total liability to you for all claims about MenuLens is limited to AUD 100.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit or exclude.

15. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of New South Wales, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales, and the courts that can hear appeals from them.

If you're a consumer living outside Australia, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.

Before going to court, please email support@inventum.com.au and give us 30 days to try to sort it out.

16. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when MenuLens changes or the law does. We'll change the effective date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app at least 14 days before it takes effect, unless it has to happen sooner for legal or safety reasons. If you keep using MenuLens after a change takes effect, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can stop using MenuLens and delete your account.

17. If you downloaded MenuLens from Apple's App Store

These extra terms apply to the iPhone and iPad app:

  1. These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for MenuLens or its content.
  2. Your licence to use the app is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. Family Sharing members may also use it.
  3. We, not Apple, are responsible for maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
  4. If the app fails to meet any warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for it, if any. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app. We're responsible for any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses caused by any failure to meet a warranty, to the extent these terms don't exclude it.
  5. We, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claims you or anyone else make about the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
  6. If anyone claims that the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and resolving that claim.
  7. You confirm that you aren't in a country under a US Government embargo or one the US Government has designated as supporting terrorism, and that you aren't on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  8. You must also follow the terms of any third party that applies when you use the app, such as your mobile carrier's.
  9. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you.

Questions, complaints or claims about the app go to us: Inventum Technologies Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, support@inventum.com.au.

18. General

  • These terms, with our Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and us about MenuLens.
  • If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we don't enforce a right straight away, we haven't given it up.
  • We may transfer these terms to a business that takes over MenuLens, and we'll tell you if we do. Your rights won't be reduced as a result. You can't transfer your rights under these terms.
